How Does This Calculator Work?
The calculator multiplies your building footprint by a pitch multiplier — a factor greater than 1 that accounts for the extra surface area created by the roof's slope.
A sloped roof has more actual surface area than the building's footprint below it. This calculator applies a pitch multiplier to estimate the true roof area for material ordering.
Example Calculation
Standard Home Example
A 1,500 sq ft footprint, 6-in-12 pitch (multiplier 1.118).
1500 × 1.118 = 1,677 sq ft of roof surface.
Tips
Common multipliers: flat/low-slope ≈ 1.02, 4-in-12 ≈ 1.054, 6-in-12 ≈ 1.118, 8-in-12 ≈ 1.202, 12-in-12 ≈ 1.414. Check a pitch-multiplier chart for your exact pitch.
